Romantic Classic British Film!
At first I really don’t have any idea
about this film my classmates just told me that this is a type of film wherein
beauty and wardrobe convenes. There are some told me about the positive
responses from the audience about the book or the novel itself since it was
written by Jane Austine. Well, all their opinion is true. Watching this kind of
movie is such like watching a Disney cartoon like Cinderella but in human version.
Though Pride and Prejudice is no magical like Cinderella it is also shows the
nature of a Royal type story wherein Royals can’t be fall in love with the low
class personality. This film Pride
& Prejudice, with Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth
Bennet, was a big hit in England, Netherlands and other European countries.
For
those who aren’t familiar about this film, Pride and Prejudice is a romantic
costume movie that takes place in 19th century England. The story is
all about the Bennet family having six daughters. The father and the mother pushed
their six daughters to marry a man that owns a lot of money just to secure their
better future. Jane is the oldest of the six; she is beautiful and full of enthusiasm.
Jane hopes to marry a rich aristocrat named Charles Bingley who just moved to a
castle nearby. Jane’s younger sister Elizabeth, the main character of the movie
wants to help her conquer his heart who later finds out that Mr. Bingley’s
friend Mr. Darcy who is known to be a rich and arrogant sabotages her plans. Elizabeth
Bennet and Mr. Darcy became enemies at first but as the story progresses they
later find out that their views and opinions are based on wrong information.
But aside from Mr. Darcy here is this Mr. in the person
of George Wickham who also likes the second Ms. Bennet (Elizabeth). Mr. Wickham
has been familiar with Mr. Darcy since he was the son of Mr. Darcy’s father’s
warden. Mr. Wickham as an officer in the military he is charming that is why he’d
quickly establish affection with Elizabeth. However as a suitor and just to win
the battle with Mr. Darcy, Mr. Wickham told Elizabeth about the wrong doings of
Mr. Darcy done him but later eventually found out to have been the offender.
Mr. Wickham on the other hand has secretly married with Lydia Elizabeth’s
younger sister.
Moreover as I watch the film I could say that Mise en scène
was applied. It is obviously telling a story in a visually artful ways through
its storyboarding, cinematography, set design and the story itself. We can see
the costumes of the actors and actresses that truly inspired in the 19th
century. Aside from the wardrobes itself time gives the audience a hint that the
film was set during 19th century.
Aside from the beauty of this film it also more of the depictions
of the societal problems like the gaps between the poor and the rich but in the
end they fight and break the rules for it is NOT all about the castle, maids,
wardens, diamonds or the mansion but it is all about the feelings of love and
be love in returned.
